LEARNING APPROACH

Understanding and catering to each child’s unique learning style is at the heart of our educational approach. This commitment to a personalised learning experience ensures that every student’s journey is not only engaging but also deeply meaningful.

We explicitly teach classroom behaviours and expectations in a clear, consistent way. Our students are familiar with five core classroom expectations (Do Now, Entry Routine, Cold Call, No Opt Out and Exit Tickets).  These techniques help ensure students don’t fall through the gaps and avoid assuming knowledge, comprehension and skills.

Our teachers create consistent classroom procedures that encourage participation and engagement and maximise the power of routines and habits to improve learning efficiency.

Key learning areas (use any of the key learning .jpg images as needed through this section)

Our educational pathway encompasses a broad spectrum of learning. From Years 7-10, students engage with eight key learning areas as outlined in the Australian Curriculum, spanning English, Health and Physical Education (HPE), Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), languages, mathematics, science, technologies, and the arts.

ELECTIVES

In Year 7 students study a term each of electives that span technologies including agriculture, food and digital technology; the arts including visual art, music and drama; and languages, including Greek, Spanish and Aboriginal culture. As they progress through Years 8-10, students refine their electives to reflect their individual strengths and passions.

Year 7 – 9 Studios

As students begin their journey with us, we introduce them to contextualised learning opportunities through our Years 7-9 Studios. These projects allow students to delve into their interests and connect with our community, all while developing skills that align closely with vital capabilities.

Year 9

By Year 9, our students embark on their own entrepreneurial venture through the $30 Boss project, further honing their skills in critical thinking and problem solving.

This initiative also cultivates leadership, teamwork, creativity, and resilience as our students transform ideas into actionable business plans, navigating challenges, and bringing their visions to life in the modern marketplace.

Year 10

From Year 10, students begin their journey with the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), seizing opportunities to start their SACE studies through the compulsory 10-credit Stage 1 SACE subject Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF).

Our unique and innovative Middle School program embodies a collaborative spirit, to ensure students not only excel academically but also develop critical life skills.

EIF

Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) is designed to prepare students for a different way of thinking and learning in senior school, developing the knowledge, skills and capabilities required to be thriving learners. As part of the SACE subject they complete a project based on their interests.

Sporting Opportunities

Our sporting program is guided by the core principles of participation, effort and personal growth. We are committed to providing every student with opportunities to be involved in meaningful sporting experiences that encourage them to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and strive to give their best in all situations.

We believe that physical activity is an essential part of developing confident, healthy and resilient young people.

We foster a culture where effort is valued as strongly as achievement.

Students are encouraged to engage in all sporting activities, whether competitive events, training sessions, or whole school carnivals, with dedication, positivity and a genuine desire to improve.

We offer whole-school sporting events including swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals, and selected students participate in additional interschool and SA competitions as well as local carnivals.

SACE Students

Students in Year 11-12 have access to more than 40 subjects. These cover the sciences, mathematics, English, health and wellbeing, creative arts, music, outdoor education, Spanish, psychology, women’s studies and more.

Career Pathways

Our career pathways program supports our Year 10 students in developing their personalised positive post-school pathways by being better informed after having experienced the workforce.

Specislist Sports Academy

From Years 10-12, students have the opportunity to join the Specialist Sports Academy, which operates through the Riverland Secondary Schools Alliance (RSSA). Launched in 2026, this program provides a pathway for students into all aspects of elite sporting professions and develops strong industry and community links. In 2027, this will include both a football and netball focus.

Vocational Education and Training

Students in Years 11 and 12 can elect to study through the Vocational Education Training (VET) program run through the RSSA. VET students spend every Thursday participating in their courses, which cover a variety of industries, including information technology, construction, education, cookery, hospitality, individual support and allied health and can provide a pathway into workplaces as well as direct entry into some university degrees. VET students can apply their qualifications to support their pathway into apprenticeships, traineeships and university entrance.

ACEE

The ACEE (Automotive, Construction, Engineering, Electrical) program is designed to provide educational opportunities and hands-on learning for students who have identified specific areas of interest for their positive post-school pathway. Working with partners across industry, tertiary education institutions and the wider community, this program is designed to allow students to be eligible for SACE completion and be prepared for the workforce.

Local Delivery

BRSC offers students the opportunity to study specialist subjects through a multi-school shared delivery model.

This operates through the RSSA with subjects considered regionally and offered as part of the annual subject selection process.

These are delivered primarily online with Local Delivery Days scheduled to allow students to work together with their teachers and peers.

This collaborative approach ensures students have access to their preferred subjects so they can pursue their passions and possible career pathways.

SACE and Post Year 12 Pathways

We are proud of our record for linking classroom learning with further education, training, apprenticeships, or employment.

We offer extensive SACE subject selection to ensure students are eligible for access to their desired tertiary courses and past students have gone on to study everything from medicine and engineering to teaching and psychology.

Our specialist SACE teachers capably guide students to achieve their best subject results, and our students have excelled with high Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) results.

We also supported students into traineeships and apprenticeships through our school-based program, which allows students in Years 10-12 to combine part-time work, paid training, and school.

In 2025, 32 BRSC students had undertaken an Australian school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. In addition, 19 students completed a Certificate III in Vocational Education and Training, 27 students completed a Certificate II in Vocational Education and Training and 126 students did some form of VET learning.
