STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

CAMPUS AND EXCURSION

A range of camps and excursions are offered each year including curriculum-based activities such as bushwalking, kayaking, university visits and extra curricular activities such as knockout cup sports. Camps and excursions stimulate and challenge students while providing opportunities to interact with teachers and each other in a setting vastly different from the classroom. Students discover and experience new environmental settings and learn new skills, while creating valuable connections that form the foundations of positive wellbeing and strong learning outcomes.

MOUNT GAMBIER EXCHANGE

The Mount Gambier Exchange is a long-standing historic annual sporting and cultural event between BRSC and Mount Gambier High School.

Established in 1947, it is regarded as one of the longest running public school exchange programs and features sporting and debating competitions. Held across two days, it is open to all year levels and includes soccer, football, basketball and netball and creates lasting connections and friendships.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

The Science and Engineering Challenge Outreach Program is presented annually by the University of Newcastle and run in partnership with the Rotary Club. It provides an opportunity for Year 10 students to compete against other local schools in hands-on, problem-based activities that require students to think critically and creatively.

PROM AND GRADUATION

Students are recognised and acknowledged with a graduation ceremony and prom held at the end of the year.

These formal events celebrate their successes and accomplishments upon the completion of their secondary education.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS

Instrumental music lessons are provided,  on site, by specialist Department for Education staff. Students may be offered small group lessons on clarinet, flute, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, drum kit, electric bass or guitar to support students studying classroom music.

SCHOOL BAND

Our music program provides opportunities for students to reach their musical potential, while surrounded by like-minded peers. Our school band provides entertainment for both school and community events, allowing authentic opportunities for the highly committed team of students to further develop their craft and performance skills.

SPANISH STUDY TOUR

In 2016, 2018 and 2025, our students travelled to Spain in conjunction with the School of Languages in Adelaide, as part of a three week Spanish study tour.

While in Spain, students stay with accredited host families and attend daily Spanish lessons at a reputable Spanish learning institute. Students also have the opportunity to experience Spanish culture through tours and other experiences offered to all participants. This opportunity is one that BRSC will continue to offer to Senior Secondary students who are or intend to study Spanish, with the next tour planned to take place in 2028.

ROBOTICS

Students have multiple opportunities to participate in robotic challenges throughout the year. One opportunity is the SA Power Networks (SAPN) Robotics Challenge, in which students build a robot that can perform tasks currently performed manually by SAPN workers. Students also have the opportunity to participate in VEX Robotics competitions, which prepare students to become future innovators and promote pathways in STEM careers with students developing a range of valuable skills within communication, leadership, time management and collaboration.

MASA QUIZ NIGHT

The MASA Quiz Night is an annual event held in Term 3. Junior and Senior Secondary students create teams to compete against students from other Riverland high school, testing their mathematical and general knowledge skills.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Student leadership is an integral part of our educational philosophy as it fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability among students and empowers them to take ownership of their learning and school community.

By engaging in leadership roles, students develop essential skills including communication, teamwork, problem solving and decision making.

They contribute to a positive school culture by promoting inclusivity, diversity and mutual respect.

The leadership program also provides opportunities for students to voice their opinions, contribute ideas and participate in the decision-making processes, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.

Students across all year levels can nominate for a leadership position within the student leadership council, sport house captains and peer support.

Student leadership programs play a crucial role in nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
