From attending the Hort Connections Convention in Adelaide, through to installing irrigation, preparing for a floriculture enterprise and incubating chicken eggs, it’s been a busy semester for agriculture students.

Hort Connections Convention

Five Year 12 Agriculture students and two Year 10 (SACE Stage 1) students attended an excursion to the Hort Connections Convention held in Adelaide.

We were one of six schools lucky enough to receive tickets through VEG Education.

It was a fantastic experience for the students, giving them the opportunity to make industry connections and explore career pathways in agriculture and horticulture that weren’t just working on a farm.

They were able to engage with industry professionals and gain a broader understanding of the diverse opportunities available within the sector.

The students also had the opportunity to sit in on question time at Parliament House in Adelaide, an experience coordinated by MLC Nicola Centofanti.

Year 12 Agriculture – Industry Connections Stream

This term, students have been installing and learning about irrigation systems.

They have completed an assignment focused on garden bed irrigation installation, helping them develop practical skills that may be useful beyond school, both in their personal lives and in future employment opportunities.

Through the assignment they completed planning in regard to how to install irrigation, what products they needed, and costings.

Year 11 Agriculture – Floriculture Enterprise

The Year 11 students have been hard at work preparing and beginning to establish a floriculture enterprise on the agriculture block.

Through guided learning, they have completed the research and planning required to establish the enterprise themselves.

They have also created some impressive grower guides based on their research and the practical work completed on the Ag block.

Year 8 Agriculture – Poultry Production

The Year 8 students are currently learning about poultry farming, including both laying hens and meat chickens.

We are incubating eggs as part of the unit. If we have some successful hatches, students will be able to further explore chick development, health, and management.

Students seem to have enjoyed learning about commercial poultry production and how chickens are raised within Australia’s agricultural industry.
